The Role of University Teacher

By: Dr. Hanna Tushyeh

English Department
The job of a university teacher has many sides. The most obvious function of
university teacher is the academic duty. In this capacity, he teaches classes in a lively
and exciting way, conducts research, and keep in touch with recent developments in
his field.
Yet the duties of university teacher certainly go beyond the academic functions. In
addition to being dedicated to his subject and being more learning through education
and research, a university teacher brings something more to his relationship with his
students than a high school teacher, for example, good high school and university
teachers treat students fairly, do not lose their tempers easily, and are generally nice
people that anyone would like to have as a friend. But the teacher on the university
campus is much more concerned with his students in a personal way. He is at the
same time the teacher, the friend, and the counselor of his students.
A university teacher should also get involved in the affairs and the welfare of his
society. He should be generous with his time and effort, extending help, expertise, and
support whenever he feels that society needs his involvement and participation. This
involvement can be manifested through discussions, lectures, articles, workshops,
voluntary work, and other activities that help to enrich his community culturally,
socially, and spiritually.
